What would be your biggest tip for packing light?
If you are trying to pack light or travel with hand luggage, then working on a colour theme is essential. Choosing pieces that can be interchanged and layered over or under each other will reduce your packing list dramatically. Luckily swimwear is pretty compact so don’t worry too much about that as the important thing is to have your favourite styles that you love to wear and feel confident in. Instead, choose lightweight kaftans in silk that not only pack away to nothing but will work as an elegant evening look too. Choose one statement evening bag that will work with all your outfits and keep shoes to a minimum. I love a beach basket to carry everything from my towel to my sun cream and book and they’re great as you can use them as your airport carryall.
How has your holiday style changed over the years?
I’ve always been a fan of fun swimwear. And whilst I mostly wear bikinis in order to top up on my tan, I love wearing one pieces when I’m with friends around the pool or on a boat. When I’m choosing my next bikini or swimsuit I have the same approach to when I’m shopping for anything else. Swimwear is a crucial part of your wardrobe that deserves time and preparation. Don’t be afraid to try on different styles and colours. Not everything is going to suit you but it’s important to figure out what works and what doesn’t so you save time shopping in the future.
What do you think is behind the increased popularity of resortwear right now?
When we launched the website nearly 6 years ago there really wasn’t a lot of choice available to UK customers. So it wasn’t necessarily that there wasn’t demand but fashionable swimwear simply wasn’t available. Those who perhaps didn’t care for swimwear have also realised that, with social media taking an increasingly important role in our lives, whether you like it or not, someone be it your friend or family is going to be taking a picture of you on vacation and sharing it online – so we want to look our best. Our lives are increasingly busier and more stressful, and vacations are an important part of our downtime. And if you don’t have time to jet away to somewhere hot, simply scrolling through pictures of others on beautiful beaches around the world helps us escape the grey weather in the UK.
What is your signature swimwear style?
I just go with what I’m feeling each season. I like to mix it up on holiday so generally, I take away 3 bikinis and 2 one pieces for a 1 week vacation. I always have a bandeau and a triangle to wear on alternate days to avoid tan lines. I’m partial to a bold print and of course a white swimsuit is a must to show off my tan towards the end of the holiday. I’m particularly loving TM Rio De Janeiro’s rainbow swimsuits and Hunza G’s metallic cocoa one piece which looks gorgeous against golden skin.
What have been your biggest style mistakes with swimwear?
I don’t really think I have ever made any swimwear style mistakes. Thankfully my mother had an impeccable eye and loved taking us shopping. She would always encourage us to follow our instincts and to have confidence in forging our own style. Her biggest tip was to enjoy our bodies no matter what our age as they would never look as good as they did at that moment in time. Perhaps my faux pas would be a certain white bikini with a designer check trim that I begged my mother to buy me when I was 16. It cost £120 nearly 20 years ago which was a lot - especially when I found it was completely see-through on exiting the sea in front of all my friends in Puglia!
What would be your advice to ensure your holiday wardrobe works year after year?
Buy pieces you love. Investing in beautiful and timeless pieces is worth it in the long run as they will be items you wear time and time again. And don’t leave your vacation wardrobe shopping to the last minute to avoid any knee-jerk purchases. Take time and get to know what works for your body shape. Swimwear is one of the most playful items of clothing you can buy and shouldn’t be a chore.
