Georgia Gibbs is a size 6 bikini model and her BFF Kate Wasley a size 16 – together they are campaigning for brands to use bikini models of all sizes in their advertising campaigns. They recently launched their joint Instagram page Any Body where they upload beautiful pictures of themselves on the beach and motivational quotes.
Weasley said in an interview with Australia’s The Daily Telegraph “It’s always women of similar sizes put next to each other, especially in the modelling world when in reality, if you look around, no one body is the same, not in shape, colour, markings and features.”
We asked Beach Flamingo Co-Founder Lily Russo to share her thoughts on the subject, “ It is concerning that many brands only design up to a UK size 12. It's frustrating for us as a retailer, but there are many reasons for this with some choosing the cheaper option of producing a smaller size range and some not having the expertise of knowing how to grade swimwear in larger sizes. I would imagine some brands would prefer not to see their bikinis on larger women as it isn’t ‘on brand’ but I do think there is also a fear they won’t sell. Women who are a size 14 and above have become accustomed to having a smaller selection of swimwear and clothing to shop from so many think they have given up looking for it. The 3 Beach Flamingo founders, including myself, are of different ages, sizes and body shapes, which is why we try to have something for everyone and is something we constantly try to improve - but of course, we are also limited to what is available to us from brands. All of the designers we stock are brands whose ultimate goals are to empower women and make them feel great. Any Body is a great initiative and we are happy to support anyone who believes in inclusivity and the support of other women.”
